As you can see from above, we have a huge range of filter medias from many different manufacturers, some of which have been designed for use in a specific filter, whilst others are more general in use.

Fundamentally there are three different approaches to filtration which the fish keepers should be aware. There are outlined in detail within our blog article, however we’ll summarise below.

Mechanical Filtration:

This is the most obvious form of filtration that is used. Water is drawn through a material such as foam, which captures waste particles. The finer the material that is used, the finer the particles that are captured.

Mechanical filters are used generally as the first line of filtration in the filter as they prevent large particles settling within any biological filter material. This prevents the filter from being clogged and increases the time between maintenance intervals.

Finer filter pads are generally considered (and are priced accordingly) to be disposable, where as the coarser blue pads can often be re-used on several occasions. If cleaning a coarse blue filter foam for re-use, rinse in used fish tank water as part of your maintenance routine, as tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria that will live within the foam. This is particularly important if you have an internal power filter that does not include any other form of biological filter media.

It is recommended that you do not replace all of your filter foams at the same time, as doing so will significantly reduce the efficiency of your filter.

If pre-cut filter pads are available for the model of filter that you use, it is sensible to purchase these. Their design should ensure that no water bypasses the mechanical filter media, helping to ensure the longevity of the biological media below.

Biological Filtration:

This form of filtration is the most important as without beneficial bacterial, pollutants would soon build within the aquarium to the detriment of any livestock.

Over time a colony of beneficial bacteria will develop within your filter, either on the coarse filter foams that you have (if using an internal power filter) or on the ceramic filter media specifically developed for this purpose (if using an external power filter). Water that has already been cleaned of large particles passes through the biological media. Whilst there may be no obvious signs of waste, if you have livestock ammonia will be being produced. If left alone this will create toxic conditions.

The first colony of beneficial bacteria to develop will consume the ammonia produced, transforming this into nitrite which is slightly less toxic than ammonia. A second colony of beneficial bacteria will then consume the nitrite, converting this into nitrate, which again is less toxic. Test kits are available to help you monitor these pollutants, so you’ll be fully aware if your filter is performing as required.

In most circumstances, particularly with freshwater fish, include as large a volume of biological filter media as possible, as the more bacteria that you have the better!

Please note that over time Nitrate levels are likely to increase within your fish tank. The most effective way to deal with Nitrates is through dilution. As such, you should aim to change approximately 15-20% of your aquarium’s water every 10 – 14 days with clean, dechlorinated water.

Chemical Filtration:

This is a process of water purification achieved using specialist filter medias, such activated carbon of phosphate sponges, which target a specific pollutants in the aquarium.

These medias are often supplied in net bags which are placed within the aquarium filter, or within a fluidised filter, allowing water to pass through them.

Activated carbon is the most commonly used chemical filter media. When placed inside a filter it absorbs discolouration and any odours that may exist, leaving crystal clear water in your aquarium. Activated carbon should be regularly replaced (to manufacturer guidelines) as in time it will become exhausted. Please also note that activated carbon should always be removed from a filter if using medication as it will remove the medication preventing treatment!

Other types of chemical filter medias are include copper, phosphate and nitrate sponges. TMC also manufacture a range of chemical filtration pads which add additional elements such as Calcium or Magnesium into the water that passes through their filters, as required by marine inverts.
