Why Choose an External Canister Filter:
External canister filters offer great flexibility and unsurpassed filtration on standard freshwater and marine aquariums. They are placed either next to or below your aquarium, with a filter intake that siphons dirty water from the fish tank, and a spray bar (or alternative output) which returns clean filtered water. As they do not need to be situated in the aquarium itself, they are often easy to hide in your aquarium's cabinet.
Compared to in internal power filter, external canister filters have a significantly larger volume for filter media and are scalable for aquariums up to 1,500lts. This larger capacity provides you the ability to mix an match your filter media to your specific requirements. Generally, a mechanical filter media is placed at the beginning of the flow, with a chemical filter media such as activated carbon or phosphate remover being placed in the centre. Finally a biological filter media is placed as the final media, where large populations of beneficial bacteria can grow, consuming the aquarium livestock's waste products.
